An unusual DOC, a noble grape like Merlot, the vision and stubbornness of a family that has been making quality wine for generations: these are the ingredients at the base of one of the most famous and awarded Super Tuscans in the world.

Everything is started from an intuition of Lucia, mother of today’s patron Luca Sanjust, who has identified a special vineyard set on a hill, characterized by a unique soil and particularly suited to the production of Merlot.

The vineyard of the same name, planted during the nineties with a balance of Bordeaux blend such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc and Petit Verdot, extends for about ten hectares in a place called Feriale on a land with various layers of marl, alberese and sandstone with greater concentration clayey, at an average altitude of 300 meters and south-east exposure. Suitable soil because the higher concentration of clay allows to maintain humidity in the hot summer months, in the absence of rainfall and irrigation (as desired by the company).

The vineyard has been treated in a natural and sustainable way in Petrolo since 2004: the aforementioned absence of irrigation is accompanied by a deliberate lack of fertilization of the land to support natural grassing.

The focus on sustainability is closely linked to respect for the raw material, carefully treated in the cellar after manual harvesting, maceration of at least 15 days with frequent manual pumping over, use of native yeasts, batonnage of fine lees: these are just some of the typical practices behind the Galatrona and before aging for 18 months in barrique.

Certainly at ease in case of long maturation, it is however ready to drink by a taster who is rightly patient to add this oenological pearl to his experience, especially in magnum format.
